Poe Portrait by Nina UlanaRavenous for Reading Logo

Celebrating both summer reading and Edgar Allan Poe's 200th birth year, Adult Services' theme for this year's summer read is "Raven-ous for Reading!"

Registration begins June 8th and ends Friday, July 24th. Register at either the RA or AV Help Desks. As the month progresses you’ll find numerous instances of the presence of Poe’s Raven in Lisle Library...

One instance will involve your participation: Our "Name That Raven" contest! As famous as The Raven is, sadly, he’s missing a worthy name.
He will be hovering hopefully over the reference desk to help inspire contestants to come up with the perfect name for Poe’s raven. The winning name will be announced at the Summer Read party on July 29th and the winning submitter will receive a prize for their efforts.

As a writer, Poe crosses genres with stories in horror, mystery, and suspense. On the non-fiction side of the house, Poe is acclaimed for his poetry, was a noted reviewer in his time, and has since become the subject of numerous biographies -- even as a character in other authors' works! So remember: any books you read whether fiction or non-fiction, will count toward summer read prizes!

Read the minimum of three books and receive a "Raven-ous" prize! Don’t be surprised if one of the ravens assisting our Help Desks crows over your success...

Receive a raffle ticket for each form you fill out on books you've read. The more you read, the better your chances to win some great prizes!

Other Raven-ous "recruits" will be displaying their Summer Read enthusiasm as well. See how many you can spot!

Midway through Summer Read, will be toasted by attending our double-feature of classic Poe horror movies: The Pit and the Pendulum & The Fall of the House of Usher – both starring Vincent Price!

Vincent Price LogoVincent will come in to play at the Summer Read Party, Wednesday July 29th! Come see Tim Burton’s homage to both Poe and Vincent Price in the first animation work he ever did. Our mystery Poe guest will be attending to share more on Edgar Allan Poe. Refreshments will be available. Raffle Prize winners will be drawn, and our binders of your best recommendations of Summer Read 2009 for Fiction, Non-Fiction, Mystery, Romance, Science Fiction & Fantasy will be available for you to jot down good reads you may have missed!
