What is an Interlibrary Loan?

Interlibrary Loan, or ILL, is a method of obtaining books/materials from other area libraries.  This is a free service to our patrons.  The Library searches for the item in various databases to locate another library system which owns the item and is willing to lend the item to the Lisle Library District.  There are some restrictions --  See below.

How long does it take?

Lisle Library is committed to providing fast access to library resources. The majority of requests can be processed and filled in approximately 5-7 working days.  Unfortunately, many requests take a great deal longer, despite our best efforts.  There are no such things as "rush orders," sorry.

How do I place an ILL?

You may place an ILL by either calling the Adult Services Department at 630.971.1675 x1501 or x1502, or by emailing us at adultservices@lislelibrary.org -- or you can always stop by in person.  If you are contacting us by phone or email, please provide your personal information: full name, phone number, and library bar code number.

Can I get a newly published book through ILL?

Generally, no.  Patrons of the library which owns the newer item are given first priority.  Give the item at least six months from the date of being published, before you request it from Lisle Library District.

How do I know when it arrives & where do I pick up my ILL?

You will be notified by phone & your ILL will be held at the Circulation Services Desk.  For questions please call 630.971.1675 x2007

How long can I keep an ILL?

The length of the loan is set by the lending library. The due date is noted on each item.

Can I renew an ILL?

Renewals are possible, but it is up to the individual lending library. Borrowers must contact Lisle Library (630.971.1675 x2007) before the due date and we then contact the lending library for a renewal date

Are there restrictions? Am I eligible?

Interlibrary Loans are for Lisle Library card holders (Library card information/eligibility below).  Reciprocal borrowers have to contact their own library to request materials.  Some types of materials are not  loaned between libraries. We do not request from other libraries books which we own or have on order.  For these materials, a library staff member may place this book "On Hold" for you.  You must also be in "good standing" with Lisle Library regarding fines and overdue materials.

Card Eligibility:

All Lisle Library District residents are eligible for a library card.  The library district includes most of Lisle,  including unincorporated subdivisions such as Four Lakes, Woodridge Estates and The Meadows.  Portions of unincorporated Naperville, including Steeple Run, are also included in the district.  Lisle Library District residents pay taxes to the library district, which is reflected on their tax bill.  Everyone in the household is entitled to a library card, regardless of age.
