Make a yummy snack and while it’s baking listen to stories that are perfect for kindergarteners through third-graders.  For grades K-3.  Youth Services Activity Room. Register August 16th.

All aboard the Caboose Club! Parents and preschool aged children can listen to stories about trains, visit the 1875 train depot, watch the model trains and play in our real life caboose. For ages 3-6. Register August 16th.

Come and enjoy the newly released movie, Diary of a Wimpy Kid, on the big screen!  Popcorn will be served! For all ages (children 5 and under must be accompanied by an adult). Meeting Room A/B. Register August 16th for the September program and September 13th for the October program.

Beat those back to school blues at the library with amazing school supply crafts and back to school stories! Come play amazing games, create your own awesome school supplies, and hear about the latest in back to school fiction for kids in the know! For grades 1-5. Meeting Room A/B. Author David Ellis

September 16th  (Thursday)

7:00-8:30 p.m.  

David Ellis is a lawyer and the author of award-winning legal thrillers. In his role as Counsel to the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Dave prosecuted the impeachment of Governor Blagojevich. 

Dave's first book, Line of Vision, won the Edgar Allan Poe Award for Best First Novel. His new book, The Hidden Man, is the beginning of a new series. Does legal training help in writing a thriller. How does an author set up a series? Dave will talk about writing and the law.

Murder in the Stacks: A Live Action Roll Play Event

September 18th (Saturday)

1:00-4:00 p.m.

Join us in a classic murder mystery! James McKnight , hometown best-selling author comes to the library for a fundraising event and is found dead in the stacks. Take a role as a guest, police officer, or library employee. Will you catch the murderer . . . or are you the murderer? Meeting Room A/B. For grades 6 & up. Register August 30th.

Celebrate Better Breakfast Month

September 21st (Tuesday)

4:00-5:00 p.m.

Studies show that a good breakfast improves student performance.  Join us for a look at cereal, everyone’s favorite breakfast food.  Participants will learn about the history of cereal, test their cereal I.Q., play some fun games, and create a cereal of their own to take home and enjoy. For grades 4-6. Meeting Room A/B. Register August 30th.

We will do puzzles, tell jokes, play games, and read some stories -- all from a great kids’ magazine! We'll even try to get something of ours published in the magazine! For grades K-3. Youth Services Activity Room. Register August 30th.

 

Through the Eye of the Hubble

September 23rd  (Thursday)

7:00-8:30 p.m.

The Hubble Space Telescope is probably the most famous telescope ever built. The images it has collected have transformed our knowledge of the universe. Michelle Nichols, Master Educator at Chicago's Adler Planetarium, will present some of the well-known, and not-so-well-known, images and results from the past 20 years of the Hubble's mission and offer a sneak peak at Hubble's replacement--the James Webb Space Telescope.

Lyric Opera Preview: Macbeth

September 30th (Thursday)

7:00-8:00 p.m.

Witches on a wind-blasted heath prophesy that Macbeth will wear the Scottish crown. And so begins his bloody march to power--killing king and kinsmen as his murderously ambitious wife spurs him on! Giuseppe Verdi revered Shakespeare and it shows, as his potently dramatic music illuminates all the famous themes and scenes. Carla Thorpe, from the Lyric’s Lecture Corps will preview the opera.

Better than masks...Diane Teng, professional theater makeup artist demonstrates techniques for applying the best theatrical effects ever. Your friends will be amazed with your transformation. A few models will be chosen from the audience. Parent's written permission is required if you wish to be a model. For grades 6 & up. Youth Services Activity Room. Registration opens September 13th.

 

Vintage Fall Flavors: Classic Autumn Treats

October 7th  (Thursday)

7:00-8:30 p.m.

Cookbook collector Amy Alessio brings fall treats--many apple or pumpkin based-- and lots of recipes from vintage cookbooks for a real taste of autumn. Food will be served and recipes will be available to take home.  This program is limited to 60 participants--no registration.

Laura Doherty Live @ Lisle Library!

October 11th (Monday) 

10:30-11:30 a.m.

Laura is a Chicago-based children's musician with an ear for a catchy melody. Armed with her acoustic guitar, she has written and recorded three albums for the folk-pop listener (solo and with Sweet Hello), and in May 2009 released her first CD of original children's songs, called "KIDS IN THE CITY", which received the 2009 Gold NAPPA AWARD and the Gold Parent's Choice Award.  For kids of all ages . Meeting Room A/B. No registration necessary.

A Guide to Social Security

Lisle financial planners Rick and Andy  Umbach will tell us about the ins and outs and the future of the Social Security system. Aimed primarily at Baby Boomers, this program will provide answers to many common questions about Social Security.
