This page has links for Basic Search, Advanced Search, and Help.

There is a link for More information about using the NetLibrary web site where you'll find help on using NetLibrary's ebooks.  Ebooks are files that you can download to your computer to read - not listen to.

There is also a link to Audiobook Center where you can search audiobook titles available for downloading.

Note: There is also a link to the entire collection of NetLibrary/Recorded Books, not just those subscribed to by ListenIllinois.

Putting Audiobook Files onto Your MP3 Player in 4 Steps

Step 1: Create a NetLibrary/Recorded Books Account

A new user will need to get a Username and Password on the NetLibrary/Recorded Books website. This is required by NetLibrary and needs to be set up through the link on the NetLibrary site called

Create a Free Account

Choose whatever you want to use for the Username. The Password will need to be at least 6 digits.

When you have successfully filled out the fields required by NetLibrary to start your free account, it will tell you so.

Your account has been successfully created

Step 2: Downloading Audiobooks

Click on the Audiobook Center link or a Search button to get to the audiobooks that are downloadable

When you see a title you want to borrow, click on the link that says: Download this Audiobook.

You are then given the option to either:

●         Download CD Quality

or

●         Download Radio Quality*

*If you want to download to an MP3 player, you MUST use the CD quality version. If you want to play the audiobook on your computer, you can use the Radio quality version.

When you have made your selection, you will be asked again for your NetLibrary/Recorded Books Username and Password.

Re-enter these, and there will be the following message:

The Audiobook was checked out successfully and will automatically begin downloading in a few seconds.  If it does not, you can download the Audiobook manually.

NOTE: It is possible that if you are running anti-virus protection software, you will get a notice that this software has blocked the audiobook file from being downloaded.  The notice should offer a choice to "click here for options".  When you click on options, there should be one to Download.  Click on that option to continue.

You may then download the title. It will default to wherever you have set up downloaded material to go on your computer. Typically this is on the C drive, usually within the My Documents folder. You can change the place it is saved to if this is not where you want these files to go - for instance, to the My Ebooks folder within the My Documents folder.

Step 3: Transferring the Audiobook from Computer to the Windows Media® Player

These instructions are based on the current version of the Windows Media Player (version 10). If you need to download the latest version, click here.  Note: Windows 98 operating system needs version 9, see HELP on the Net Library website after logging in.

After you successfully Save the audiobook (.wma) file to your computer, you need to find the file on your computer.

Double-click on the file. This will bring up the Windows Media Player.

There will be a pop-up box that asks if you agree to be taken to a web link to get the license to use the file. Click Yes. You will be asked for your NetLibrary/Recorded Books Username and Password again.

When you have entered the Username and Password it will ask if you want to Play or Cancel.  Click Play.

The book will begin to play within the Now Playing tab of the Windows Media Player.

Step 4: Using Windows Media Player to Transfer to an MP3 Player

To copy the audiobook file onto the MP3 player, it must be added to the Sync List of the Windows Media Player.

Click on the Sync tab of the Window Media Player.

Attach the MP3 player to the computer by plugging in the USB cable to both the computer and the MP3 player. Your computer should indicate that a new piece of hardware has been detected. *This will be important when you are ready to unplug the player.

There is a pull-down arrow for the left-side box of the Sync tab.

Click on it and find the name of the audiobook file (usually near the bottom of the list). Click on the name. This will put it in the main display area of the left-side box.

At the top of the Sync tab display there is an option to Start SyncClick on this option. The Windows Media Player will then indicate that it is sending the file onto the player. This is shown in the right-side box, usually labeled Removable  Disk (E:)

Once the sync has been completed, you should see a new entry in the right-side box. It may be called “Music” and you may have to click open the small box next to it a couple of times to get to the title, but it should then display the title. When you see it there, the title is now on the MP3 player.

After you have verified that it is showing in the right-side box, you can click on the hardware icon in your pc’s system tray to Safely Remove Hardware.* (As noted in the red box that follows.) When you get the message that it is “safe to remove the hardware”, you can now unplug the MP3 player.

WARNING: If you are using an XP pc, you will need to click on the icon that indicates hardware and "Stop" it, before unplugging the MP3 player.  Failure to do so could damage the player and/or your computer.

Turn on the player and verify that the title is now on the machine.

NOTE: If you leave a session open on the NetLibrary/Recorded Books website without accessing anything, a warning message will pop up to let you know that your session will be ended unless you click the Continue Session button.
