Booked for the Day

Alexander Hamilton by Ron Chernow

On Monday, July 10th, the Booked for the Day Book Group met to discuss, Alexander Hamilton by Ron Chernow.  Here are a few things we discussed during the meeting:

  • It was the musical's success that honed our interest in Alexander Hamilton and one of the reasons we choose this book for our discussion. There were a handful of us that finished the book, but everyone made a gallant effort. The ones that did not complete the book, all plan on finishing.
  • We all agreed that it is extremely well written and very engaging. The book’s pace at times are slow because it’s filled with historical details making it a difficult read. Some of us were concerned that we were not retaining all the information (mainly me), but we all thought the effort well worthwhile. We understood why Lin-Manuel Miranda was so inspired.
  • What stood out for many of us was how contemporary politics, with ruthless rhetoric and media blaming, was very much the same then, we read about the same distrust between parties and the same type of back door politics.
  • The question was asked if we liked Alexander Hamilton as a person. Most of us thought he had faults, as he was only human, but believed he was a highly intelligent and honest man who did everything in his power to keep the nation united.
  • We talked about Eliza and thought she was amazing for all the things she was able to achieve, many things that women in her day would never imagine.
  • Thomas Jefferson and James Madison come across as villains. One member said, brilliant minds clashing together.
  • One member mentioned that the author’s research notes and bibliography were impressive.

These are just a few things mentioned during the discussion. Please feel free to add any of your thoughts in the comment section.
