Booked for the Day

The Tenant of Wildfell Hall by Anne Bronte

On Monday, December 4th, the Booked for the Day Book Group met to discuss,The Tenant of Wildfell Hall by Anne Bronte.  Here are a few things we discussed during the meeting:

I was not able to attend the discussion but three members gave it a thumbs up, one thumbs down, and the rest were in the middle.

Everyone agreed the book improved once you got past the first 100 pages and into Helen's story.  There was a comment that the book had many biblical references - so many that it could have been in the religion section. The book was very genteel despite its reputation at the time of being scandalous - abuse was inferred, but never shown.

Some people were put off by the Victorian language and other people liked the style. Morality came into play with the alcoholism, Helen returning to Arthur when he was dying, and the lack of rights for women. People were impressed by Helen's ability to protect her son and to influence and help others despite her marginal rights in society.

These are just a few things mentioned during the discussion. Please feel free to add any of your thoughts in the comment section.
