Booked for the Day

Twisted Sisters by Jen Lancaster

On Monday, May 4th, the Booked for the Day Book Group met to discuss, Twisted Sisters by Jen Lancaster. Here are a few things we discussed during the meeting:

We started our discussion talking about the author. One of our members read her nonfiction books and saw some of her interviews and thought she was very entertaining. The main character’s personality in this book seemed to be the complete opposite of Lancaster. The real Lancaster is not that single minded on keeping to a healthy diet and lifestyle. For example the first time Lancaster made Martha Stewart’s buttercream frosting she said it was “life-changing.”

Perhaps the most entertaining part of the book is the internal voice of Reagan. The remarks she made with sarcasm and humor are things that we all would like to say out loud (but never would).

Mainly the group thought the book was unbelievable. The body swapping was just too far-fetched and way out of left field. We had a hard time believing that someone like Reagan would so quickly agree to body swapping. Also, the way she portrayed her male tenants seemed ridiculous. Having sons in their twenties I know they do not speak like that nor have I ever heard any of their friends speak like that.

If anyone had a favorite character it was Deva. She seemed to be able to connect with everyone. No one was able to relate to Reagan, the main character. She just wasn’t very likeable so it was hard to root for her.

One thing that we all enjoyed was the references to the Chicago area; White Sox versus Cubs, Mayor Daley, Rahm Emanuel as the tiny dancer, Wheaton, Lululemon and the many neighbors mentioned. The book was a lighthearted and a fast read after our last two books. Unfortunately it was not one that most of us would recommend.

These are just a few things mentioned during the discussion. Please feel free to add any of your thoughts in the comment section.
