Event Type: Film Discussion GroupDate: 3/25/2013 Start Time: 6:00 PM End Time: 8:45 PM Description: Avast! Sailing the seven cinema seas long before the "Pirates of the Caribbean", there was this often overlooked “golden age” musical , "The Pirate". Starring Judy Garland and Gene Kelly, it both spoofs and celebrated pirate movies. The choreography, set to the music of Cole Porter, was largely created by Kelly. "The Pirate" gave full rein to Kelly's athleticism and is probably best remembered for Kelly's work with The Nicholas Brothers, and for being remarkably inventive. Director Vincent Minnelli's visuals have been called "fascinating, rich, and often startling in their unexpected beauty." Other critics have called it the best musical of 1948.
