This month's feature film, "Eat a Bowl of Tea", is set in New York's Chinatown during the immediate postwar years. After a seeming eternity of separation, Chinese immigrants are finally allowed to bring their spouses to the U.S. thanks to looser immigration laws. Those husbands and wives no longer able to procreate fully expect their own sons to head back to China to seek out new brides. Russell Wong plays Ben Loy, a young man who decides not to marry the bride picked out for him, but a girl of his own choice, Mei Oi (played by Cora Miao). The film tackles several issues, including Mei's difficulty in assimilation, Ben's problems with his intrusive relatives, the outside pressure brought to bear in producing an heir, and the ongoing struggle of making ends meet financially. Both bride and groom respond to their insecurities by indulging in extramarital affairs. It takes several near-catastrophic events to prompt a happy reconciliation. LLD Board President, Richard Flint, presents a celebration of Women of the Blues. Ma Rainey, Bessie Smith, Mamie Smith, Memphis Minnie, Big Mama Thornton played to packed houses decades before their male counterparts. Join us for an open discussion at 6:30 pm and lecture at 7:00 pm to learn more about these trailblazing artists who pioneered this musical genre. In addition to being a college instructor and having taught the blues in college credit classes, Mr. Flint is also a blues musician who has performed at the Fox Valley Folk Fest, the Bluegrass Festival and the Lisle French Market. At the end of the presentation we will hold a drawing for two special door prizes! First will be a a special Blues Gift Bag donated by WDCB, Chicagoland's Choice for Jazz, Blues, News and More. Second will be parking validation for up to 12hrs. of parking in any one of the Millennium Garages, graciously donated by Laz Parking Chicago, to help you park downtown for the Chicago Blues Festival in June.
