Our group thought this was a hard book to begin, but the message the author was trying to convey came through loud and clear. What began as an ordinary day turned into their worst nightmare: trapped deep below the surface inside a mountain that was coming apart. With very limited resources, and themselves to rely upon, these men survived an ordeal never before seen or heard of. And the whole world saw and heard them. So, is this a cautionary tale, a true accounting, or something more? Showing how people can come together and move toward a common goal, support each other and take care of each other, the author made 33 ordinary men shine like the heroes they were. The reader also gets a look at how people really react in absurd and /or dangerous situations. Sure, there were moments when someone "lost it", yet there was someone else there to help them gain control and calm down. These men were minors, yet they were able to choose the best way to survive, with no injuries, for such a long time cut off from the surface. Did the men have any other options? The group (as a whole) made decisions...would the situation have been different if there was only one man leading them, and making all the decisions? We will never know...
