Modern New Orleans...then and now

A wise person once said something to the effect of “the more things change, the more they remain the same”. True of many things, and the development of New Orleans is certainly that. There was corruption in government and law enforcement then, and it’s still there now (and to be fair, this is true of many large cities in this country). Sin was profitable then, and we know it is today. People di mean and despicable things then, and still do today. In other words…not much has changed. But old New Orleans was ahead of its time in other ways. There was segregation, but not as strict as it would later become. Sin was open to all…no segregation there. Jazz was enjoyed by all in clubs throughout the city. In other words, there were no real “White only” clubs and no “Blacks only” clubs. Jazz went across lines and neighborhoods, after all good jazz is good jazz. Sin was a popular pastime for many, and it really knew no boundaries either. It’s strange that the New Orleans of the 1880’s and 90’s was a much more free and forgiving place than it is today. Strange…but true.
