Our thoughts on death

This book lead to a vibrant and jolly discussion. I think this was because the author has such an open spirit and mind about death, and the customs surrounding it. She advocates that people take more control over the customs and traditions surrounding the act of death in this country. For generations people would prepare their dead, celebrate and memorialize them, then bury or cremate them. The family had control over the events, and the timeline of preparing their loved ones for their final rest. And now we rarely do that anymore. People don’t have the time (or the stomach) to wash and prepare their dead. The whole funeral industry grew and prospered because people were/are squeamish about death and the dead. But the author shows us that there are so many options for sending your loved one on their final journey: ones that are eco-friendly as well as wallet-friendly. So many options are open to us now…we just have to be open to them.
