A recap of "Deep South"

Our discussion last night of “Deep South” was very animated, with our group members getting to the meat of the book right away. On the surface, you could be excused if you thought this was strictly a travel book. After all, the author is famous for them. But here, he goes into poverty and race , and how people can be content with what they have, no matter how “little” others see that as. Unfailingly polite and quick to offer a smile and a greeting, the people of the region proved to the author that one doesn’t need piles of money and a big house to be happy. Faith and family are often all that’s necessary. When he starts his journeys the author almost makes fun of his subjects. But by the time he finished, he has a new respect for the people and their strength. And…he also realized that while he (and others) may want to make changes and provide help, it’s unlikely to happen. This is just the way it is in the deep south.
