What we liked:
The general story and the art work
What we weren't so keen on:
That there wasn't more dialog, and that there didn't seem to be a clear goal ie. what did the author want to accomplish with this work?
After diving in and deciding the best way to read the book, the story moves very quickly. There is a little back story, but mostly it deals with the author and her father, with whom she seems to have had a love-hate relationship. She portrays him as either a button-downed professor or a hippie, depending on his dress and state of mind. Things were very differnt in the 70's, and a few of us wondered why Alison's mother didn't go through with a divorce. But with having children, and the necessity of getting a job and a possible move, divorce was probably a daunting act. So...Alison's father provides the necessary push by committing suicide...or did he? That was something none of us could decide on. Alison's coming out story was done well, and her realtionship with her father seemd to change as well. From wary collaborators to full-on friends, who shared a common trait. Did she learn enough from her father to be able to thrive as a woman, and a member of society, as well as a lesbian? To know for sure, we may need to check out the musical, which is coming to our area in the near future.
