Sept. 28, 2017 Georgette Heyer -- Mystery Masters graphic
This year's Maestra of the Mystery genre!
The Unfinished Clue

September is always our “schooling” on the maestros of mystery – and this year we’re celebrating Georgette Heyer’s 115th birthday by reading her classic, country-house murder mystery, The Unfinished Clue. While Heyer is rightly known for her incomparable Regency novels, she is also noted as a worthy member of what is now considered to be the Golden Age of mystery writers, along with Christie, Sayers, Stout, and company. It was actually her husband, George Ronald Rougier, who encouraged her to write the mysteries which quickly became popular as well. Noted for their lively dialog and clever twists, The Unfinished Clue is a fun introduction to these stories.

The stabbing of irascible General Sir Arthur Billington-Smith fails to stir up grief in anyone - least of all his family, which is no wonder considering the way he had treated them all during the fateful weekend. He had disinherited his son, humiliated his wife, refused to help his financially stricken nephew and made no secret of his loathing for his son's fiancée, a cabaret dancer. Inspector Harding picks his way through a mass of familial discontent to find the culprit - and find much more besides. ~ Courtesy of Goodreads

Oct. 19, 2017 Catriona McPherson  Quiet Neighbors

We are so happy to announce that Catriona McPherson will be both seen and heard from during the discussion of this book: She is joining us by Skype!

In Quiet Neighbors, Catriona offers a classic bookstore mystery – which she stands on its head! An atmospheric suspense novel, it is yet another of her fine stand-alone novels.

It’s the oldest bookshop in a town full of bookshops; rambling and disordered, full of treasures if you look hard. Jude found one of the treasures when she visited last summer, the high point of a miserable vacation. Now, in the depths of winter, when she has to run away, Lowell’s chaotic bookshop in that backwater of a town is the safe place she runs to.

Jude needs a bolt-hole; Lowell needs an assistant and, when an affordable rental is thrown in too, life begins to look up. The gravedigger’s cottage isn’t perfect for a woman alone but at least she has quiet neighbors.

Quiet, but not silent. The long dead and the books they left behind both have tales to tell and the dusty rooms of the bookshop are not the haven they seem to be. Lowell’s past and Jude’s present are a dangerous cocktail of secrets and lies and someone is coming to light the taper that could destroy everything. ~Courtesy of Goodreads

Catriona is a multi-award winning author who will probably be nominated for even more awards for Quiet Neighbors. Don’t miss this chance to chat with a major star on the current mystery scene – and to hear her exquisite Scottish accent!

Nov. 16, 2017 David Baldacci Memory Man Memory Man cover graphic

For an author of 33 novels (and all have been national and international bestsellers), David Baldacci does not rest on his laurels. Our novel this month, Memory Man, is the first book in a new series with a remarkable, unique hero.

Amos Decker's life changed forever--twice.

The first time was on the gridiron. A big, towering athlete, he was the only person from his hometown of Burlington ever to go pro. But his career ended before it had a chance to begin. On his very first play, a violent helmet-to-helmet collision knocked him off the field for good, and left him with an improbable side effect--he can never forget anything.

The second time was at home nearly two decades later. Now a police detective, Decker returned from a stakeout one evening and entered a nightmare--his wife, young daughter, and brother-in-law had been murdered.

His family destroyed, their killer's identity as mysterious as the motive behind the crime, and unable to forget a single detail from that horrible night, Decker finds his world collapsing around him. He leaves the police force, loses his home, and winds up on the street, taking piecemeal jobs as a private investigator when he can.

But over a year later, a man turns himself in to the police and confesses to the murders. At the same time a horrific event nearly brings Burlington to its knees, and Decker is called back in to help with this investigation. Decker also seizes his chance to learn what really happened to his family that night. To uncover the stunning truth, he must use his remarkable gifts and confront the burdens that go along with them. He must endure the memories he would much rather forget. And he may have to make the ultimate sacrifice. ~ Courtesy of Goodreads

Dec. 14, 2017 Karin Slaughter Pretty Girls Pretty Girls cover grpahic

A finalist for the 2016 Thriller Award, Pretty Girls by Karin Slaughter is a stand-alone novel that has been highly praised by the author’s peers and reviewers.

Sisters. Strangers. Survivors.

More than twenty years ago, Claire and Lydia's teenaged sister Julia vanished without a trace. The two women have not spoken since, and now their lives could not be more different. Claire is the glamorous trophy wife of an Atlanta millionaire. Lydia, a single mother, dates an ex-con and struggles to make ends meet. But neither has recovered from the horror and heartbreak of their shared loss—a devastating wound that's cruelly ripped open when Claire's husband is killed.

The disappearance of a teenage girl and the murder of a middle-aged man, almost a quarter-century apart: what could connect them? Forming a wary truce, the surviving sisters look to the past to find the truth, unearthing the secrets that destroyed their family all those years ago . . . and uncovering the possibility of redemption, and revenge, where they least expect it. ~ Courtesy of Goodreads

Pretty Girls has been called “a sophisticated and chilling psychological thriller of dangerous secrets, cold vengeance, and unexpected absolution”. Lee Child has said it is “a stunning family tragedy and a hold-your-breath pedal-to-the-metal thriller magically blended by Karin Slaughter’s trademark passion, intensity, and humanity.  Certain to be a book of the year.” Come share what you think of it!
