Jen's Take on The Martian

I really enjoyed the story, and actually, was surprised by how much I liked it. It had a good pace, and kept me in suspense (because I was determined to not flip to the last page and see what happened). I liked how the story was told by the main character, and how that gave me insight into not only his character, but to what was happening in the story. If it had been a “Mark did this …. He did that” narration, I don’t think I would have liked it as much. I liked Watney’s sense of humor, and I also felt like I was learning some science along the way. I can see where this style wouldn’t be something that everyone might like, but it kept me reading and I enjoyed it.

Since finishing the book, I’ve suggested it to members of my family (who have then suggested it to other people). I don’t know when I’ll get to see the movie, but I will definitely want to see it on the big screen and find out how the adaptation is. I’m crossing my fingers that the movie is good, too (and brings people into the library to check out the book). I give this one a 5 out of 5!

I am honestly surprised that this book got such a positive reaction from (most) everyone; quite frankly I thought that the average reader would be turned off by all the geeky stuff.
