Elderhood: Redefining Aging, Transforming Medicine, Reimagining Life

Discussion group members agreed that the case studies in the book are very interesting and intriguing, making one think about the process of aging. However, there seemed to be much repetition in the content of the case studies that could have been consolidated while offering more closure and solutions to each situation. Some members noted that the notes, acknowledgements, index, and the author’s writing style as a geriatrician and university professor were helpful but more geared toward an audience of medical school personnel or health policy experts, rather than the general public. There also could have been a more positive tone regarding aging and becoming an elder with more of a focus on health and wellness regimens early on in life to minimize the physical, mental, and emotional problems that can occur in the “golden” years of one’s life. The group agreed that there could have been more information in the content about the author’s own life and experiences, which may be the topic of a future book.
