Booked for the Day

Still Me by Jojo Moyes

On Monday, December 3rd, the Booked for the Day Book Group met to discuss, Still Me by Jojo Moyes.  Here are a few things we discussed during the meeting:

  • The group was really mixed on this book. Some liked it, some thought it was just okay, and other did not care for it.
  • The group that liked it thought it was a nice read after coming off some of our books that had tough subject matters. A perfect read for the holidays, quick, light, and fun. They enjoyed the New York setting and all the funny bits that was throughout the story.
  • Some thought it was a good story, not great.  It was no Me Before You where you learned to care for some of the characters. In Still Me Agnes Gopnick was probably the most unlikable and her husband, again, an unlikable character. We did like Louisa who once again showed that she was an honest, loyal, funny and a little quirky. The story of self-discovery, being unique and true to yourself did resonate with the group.
  • Others thought their favorite character was either Mrs. DeWitt or her dog. They thought Louisa was a little too naïve and needed to do some growing up. The part where she wanted to wear her bumblebee tights that Will gave her to Josh’s business function did seem a bit too much. We understand her trying to be herself but that might be going a little too far.
  • Others thought the book was too predictable, even the conclusion was predictable with a Sleepless in Seattle’s Empire State Building conclusion but replaced with the Rockefeller Center. And of course, all the threads were neatly tied up. Some of the group that did not read the first two books struggled to understand some of the odd story lines that did not add to the plot. One member added that whoever read the entire book deserves a gold star. I think we did decide that it is time to end Louisa’s storyline with this book.

These are just a few things mentioned during the discussion. Please feel free to add any of your thoughts in the comment section.
