The English way of doing things

Our health care systems are different, but there is still pain. Rules, regulations and the drama of neurosurgery are shared across the pond. Henry March, noted surgeon, lecturer and compassionate human being details triumphs and failures in our September selection. One thing that struck every person in our group was that fact that Marsh is so humble. There is no God complex at play...the man has admitted failures on numerous occasions. Yet, when he has to give bad news, he hopes that the person receiving it can grant some forgivness for his shortcomings. It takes great skill, curiosity and nerve to operate on the least understood part of human anatomy. So much can go wrong, and one small mistake can have grave consequences. Why would someone want all this responsibility? It's long been said that the healing professions are a calling, and very few answer the call. This isn't glamerous work: it's life saving (or life altering) work. We all agreed that this is a well written and enlightening look at what it takes to open a skull, and save a life.
