The unfortunate death of a President

To me, and others in our book group, one of the main takeaways from the book was the crazy way Garfield was treated. To our modern eyes, the President should not have died, but been in bed for a while, then back to his presidential duties. Of course, we were looking at this through the lens of modern times, and our knowledge of modern medicine. But it was a common thought that Garfield would live, resume his office and do great things. His biographers agreed that he would have been an effective leader, and accomplished many things during his term. But history will never know.
