His Majesty’s Dragon by Naomi Novik

Review: This book is the first in a series about a navy officer who bonds with a dragon named Temeraire. It is captivating. The adventure is also a war story. The English dragon fleet fight Napoleon. It is about deep abiding love between a man and his dragon. A good, fast read. I highly recommend it.

The Last Policeman by Ben H. Winters

Review: This book took me completely by surprise.  Detective Henry Palace is determined to solve his murder case even though the world is going to be obliterated by an asteroid in nine months.  It's a great mystery AND a great science-fiction book!  The writing is occasionally very beautiful. The book is full of twists and turns, and I must warn you - it becomes quite dark at times.  I would recommend this book to any mystery OR science-fiction fan.  Layered and complex, Winters’ characters AND his mystery are complete and whole.  It's very enjoyable.
