Celebrating 50 Years!

Lisle Library District is celebrating 50 years of service!

1965-2015

In 1963, the Lisle Woman's Club had a dream - to see a full-service public library in our Village. The following year, they accomplished their first step with the opening of a children's library in the basement of 4742 Main Street (the current home of B. Gunther & Company).

In September of 1964, the “Friends of the Lisle Library” group was formed to work for the passage of a referendum to create a tax-supported library.  On December 11, 1965 a referendum proposal was passed that established the Lisle Library District.  We are honored to have been able to serve the people of this community for 50 years.

On December 12, 2015 the Library celebrated our 50th Anniversary. Four months prior, Library staff created a very special song in honor of Lisle Library District and below is the fusion of the song and a few photos from our 50th party.  We thank the LLD Board of Trustees, Lisle Woman's Club, the Lisle High School Jazz Band, and the entire community for coming out to help us celebrate our 50th!

Highlights from our 50th Anniversary Celebration:

We're hosted a 50th Anniversary Open House on Saturday, December 12 between 3 - 6 p.m. Patrons had a great time gathering together for the chance to win prizes, special musical performances... plus snacks, drinks, and cake.  View event photos here!

On August 1, we held our annual Summer Read Wrap-Up Party... with a "Throwback Turtle Race" as a special 50th Anniversary twist.  Three turtles belonging to our patrons raced the Library's own Jack and Jill as an homage to the Turtle Races sponsored by the "Friends of the Lisle Library" back in the late 80s/early 90s.  We also enjoyed hot dogs, cotton candy, and classic cars provided by the Chicagoland Thunderbirds of Schaumburg.  See more event photos here!

On June 6, we kicked off our Summer Read program with a ton of 1960s-style fun!  Patrons enjoyed ice cream treats from an old fashioned "Good Humor Man" while listening to the 1960s sounds of live band Ivory Tower.  Not to mention our "old-school" game room - complete with a giant version of Kerplunk!  Click here to view more photos from our kick-off party!

Our young patrons had a great time making birthday cards and decorating cupcakes during our "Happy Birthday Lisle Library" programs on May 4 and May 5.

We celebrated National Library Week on April 18 by inviting several local community members to serve as "Honorary Librarians" for the day.  We had a great time with Senator Connelly, Supernova of the Chicago Red Stars, Lisle Mayor Joe Broda and many more!  See more photos here!

On February 13, we hosted an event with the DuPage Symphony Orchestra to honor Irv Goldstein, a founding member and past President of the "Friends of the Lisle Library," with an evening of classical music designed for the entire family.  For more photos from this event, click here.

As part of our anniversary celebration, our Board of Trustees was pleased to present Cathy and Pat Cawiezel  (far left) with a resolution that commemorates the naming of the "Albert F. and Marilyn W. Cawiezel Memorial Meeting Room" in honor of their parents. Thank you to everyone who attended this special 50th Anniversary event on January 14!

We kicked off our year-long celebration by hiding 100 “Golden Tickets” (50 upstairs and 50 downstairs) in materials throughout the library!  Keep your eyes peeled – the lucky finders of these golden tickets will be able to turn them in at the Circulation Services Desk for a prize! (Only one ticket is redeemable per person.)

Thank you for being part of our 50th year of service!
