Last night our group discussed Even THIS I get to experience by Norman Lear. Overall, the book was pretty good, even if it was a bit short in areas. We certainly got to know Mr. Lear, his 3 wives, and many of the celebrities and people he worked for/with. We learned about his experiences in WWII, how he managed to sell a skit to Danny Thomas without actually having written it yet, and how he juggled wives and other women in his life. What we really didn't get enough of was the period when he had several hit shows running simultaneously, and was starting to become involved in social causes. A bit less on the social side, and a bit more on the programming. One thing that struck almost all of us: Mr. Lear never really had a bad thing to say about anyone he mentions. Not his ex-wives, business partners, children...no one. Maybe he made a deal with a higher power: let me live to a ripe old age, and when I write my autobiography I'll go light on everyone. Who knows?
